   About the Author

  • Harriet Welty Rochefort was born and raised in Shenandoah, Iowa. She earned her B.A. from the University of Michigan and her M.S.J from The Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.
  • Author : she has written two nonfiction books. The first, French Toast , was published in 1999 by St. Martin's Press, and followed by French Fried, also published by St. Martin's Press, in March 2001. French Toast is a light-hearted but informative account of Franco-American cultural differences; French Fried is a humorous food memoir based on Rochefort's true experiences with her French family and her investigation into the world of French cuisine based on interviews and tastings with some of France's foremost sommeliers, bread and cheese makers. In May 2005 French Toast was published in French under the title : "French Toast - Heureuse comme une Américaine en France" (Happy as an American in France).
  • A columnist, she currently contributes a monthly cyberspace Letter from Paris to The Paris Pages website. You can read some of them in her Paris Diary.
  • As a speaker on Franco-American cultural differences, Harriet has addressed varied audiences in the U.S. and France, including the International Media Seminar, Elderhostel, The American Library, The Association of Americans Resident Overseas, The American Women's Group (Paris and Brussels), Missouri Southern University, Samaritan Institute (Chicago), The University of Wisconsin Conference on Taste, Terroir and Technology, etc. See upcoming events.
  • A freelance journalist, Harriet has contributed articles on French business, travel, lifestyle and culture to top U.S. newspapers and magazines including The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The International Herald Tribune and Time magazine where she worked as a stringer in the Paris bureau for almost a decade. See selected articles... and references (interviews). She is a member of the board of the Anglo-American Press Association (AAPA) in Paris.
  • A teacher of journalism and English, Harriet taught journalism seminars to students at the I.E.P. (Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris) for several years and English at Telecom and Ecole Polytechnique.
 
  • Mini-bio : After college, Harriet worked for a short time in the U.S. (including a stint checking hats and coats in the Fleur de Lys restaurant in San Francisco which she describes in her book French Fried) and then caught a freighter from Vera Cruz, Mexico to Cadiz, Spain. After a trek through Morocco and up through Spain to France, Harriet met her future French husband, Philippe,...and she has remained in France ever since.
